Transitional Housing

In addition to the Friends of Ruby Home, Canada’s first custom-built transitional house for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and two-spirit young people, we offer ongoing housing support at our Youth Centre (489 Queen St. East).

Friends of Ruby Home

Opening at the end of 2020, the Friends of Ruby Home is a custom-built transitional house for LGBTQI2S youth (aged 16-29) in Toronto. Founded by Egale Canada, before Friends of Ruby became an independent charity, the facility was brought to life with the support of the Daniels Corporation.

The innovative design created by Yabu Pushelberg (interiors) and Sustainable grew from a comprehensive consultation process with LGBTQI2S youth from the community, whose thoughts and feedback were incorporated into the final building.

No Place Like Home

Most important to youth was that the Friends of Ruby Home not feel like an institution, but rather a place of comfort and warmth – somewhere they could feel at home.

Community and Care

The Friends of Ruby Home is more than a roof over one’s head. Through shared spaces and in-house programming, youth will be part of a community, one in which they’re free to live true to who they are.  Everything will be geared towards supporting youth on their path towards independent, stable and empowered living.

This includes programs focused on cooking, cleaning, financial literacy and professional mentorships, as well as mental and physical health services like crisis intervention, counselling, health check-ups and physical activity at the house and in partnership with the Friends of Ruby Youth Services.

Housing Support

Are you a LGBTQI2S-identified youth who is in need of housing? Applications for available units at the house open yearly. Please keep an eye on our social media for updates. And if we’re unable to accommodate you at this time at the Friends of Ruby Home, we always offer housing support services at our Youth Centre to help you find a place to stay.

Applications for the Friends of Ruby Home are currently closed, but if you are in need of Housing Support please contact us to set up a meeting with a Case Manager.

Thank you to all of our Friends of Ruby Home donors, funders and supporters
