Who We Are

Friends of Ruby is a registered charity dedicated to supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and two-spirit youth (aged 16-29) through counselling, social services and housing. Founded as Egale Youth Services in 2014, we became an independent entity in 2019. To date we have supported more than 1,000 youth and prevented over 470 mental health crises. At the Friends of Ruby Home and drop-in space, we offer counselling and a variety of programs and support groups, including dedicated spaces for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour) youth.

Available positions

Administrative Assistant

Reporting to the Director of Mental Health, Youth Services & Strategic Initiatives, the Administrative Assistant is an integral component of Friends of Ruby`s day-to-day operations by providing administrative support to the Mental Health, Youth Service, Strategic Initiatives and leadership teams.

This role will organize and coordinate office administration and procedures, in order to ensure organizational effectiveness, efficiency and safety. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing intra-office communication protocols, streamlining administrative procedures, inventory control, data entry, manage administrative projects, taking and distributing meeting minutes, answering the phone and the general email, receiving and sorting mail, assisting with donations and ensuring covid-19 safety protocols are being followed.

We’re looking for an energetic person who enjoys wearing multiple hats, helping others, is very organized, detailed oriented, flexible and enjoys the administrative challenges of supporting a growing and fast pace organization.

Clinical Counsellor

We are looking for a talented clinician who identifies as a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to provide mental health and counselling support to 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, including those with intersectional identities of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC). We encourage members of the BIPOC community to apply.

Reporting to the Clinical Program Manager, the Clinical Counsellor will provide single session and short-term counselling, along with utilizing ongoing counselling skills to youth, using evidence-based practices aligned with needs identified at the time of intake and assessment to Friends of Ruby. The counsellor will also work with Drop-in participants and Friends of Ruby’s Home resident.

The Clinical Counsellor will plan and facilitate clinical groups dedicated to topics such as skills for safer living, coping and emotion management skills and mindfulness practices. The Clinical Counsellor provides crisis support to address immediate crisis, including suicide risk assessment, safety planning, emotional de-escalation, resources and referral, or connecting with emergency responders if necessary.

Team Lead, Intake & Drop-In

The Team Lead, Intake and Drop-In, role involves providing day-to-day supervision and mentoring to the Intake, Information and Referral and Drop-In teams’ staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high service delivery standards, and staff development. The Team Lead will play an integral role in contributing to and executing the strategic direction of Friends of Ruby, setting and delegating clear priorities in the development of initiatives and programs. 

The Team Lead’s focus will be providing oversight of the facility, services and programs using a youth-centered, trauma-informed, and harm-reduction approach. The Team Lead will also be required to collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders.

Reporting to the Director of Mental Health, Youth Services and Strategic Initiatives, the Programs and Community Partnerships Coordinator is responsible for the effective delivery of our youth programs and community partnerships.

About Us

Friends of Ruby supports LGBTQI2S youth (aged 16-29) through mental health services, social services and housing. Our approach is comprehensive, involving mind, body and community – supporting youth wherever they are on their personal journey.

When you give to Friends of Ruby, you directly support essential services for LGBTQI2S youth. We provide meals, groceries, community programming, practical supports and mental health services.
